Charity

Here comes the --- charity show again. They have been holding it more and more frequent now. I felt as though they have just run it a couple months ago.

The economy is bad and everybody has been tightening their “belts”. Many people are hard up for money. Singaporeans are not stingy people. If so, it will have to be the culture that shapes us to be so. Most Singaporeans are very compassionate and generous to the less well off. But I hope organizations are not taking advantage of it. (I’m not implying anything here -_- )

The donation cost increase from $2 to $3 to $5 and now to $5.40 ($5 donation, $0.21 phone companies’ administrative fees, $0.19 GST???). What I’m puzzled about is that since this is a charity, why do phone companies want to charge people for it? Can’t they treat it as donation as well? Or do they want to profit from it? And what’s the matter about GST? Do they mean that now they even have to charge service charge on donations?

Maybe next time when I see a “beggar”, instead of $2, I will now need to give $2.40 (inclusive of GST). (-_-)|||

Well, the intention of the holding the charity show is a noble one which no one would disagree.

The modern society puts a price tag in almost everything that we do, including charitable ones.

Instead of focusing on the shortcomings of such shows, perhaps there is another alternatives which you can consider for donation: You have the option of sending cheques to charitable homes/organisation directly, rather than through the shows.

Focus on the good points about the show and put less emphasis on the not-so-good ones. Not so much of being Ah Q, but rather have a relatively positive outlook in life!
